INTERVIEW: ADELE DEJAK

Adele Dejak is a one-of-a-kind designer, that creates magic and empowerment through her bold jewelry pieces. We got a look behind the curtains and found out more about her creative process, inspirations, future plans for her design studio, and even what trends she sees emerging in jewelry and Contemporary African Design in the new year!

54KIBO: TELL US ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS & INSPIRATION FOR YOUR UNIQUE DESIGNS?

AD: I am often inspired by nature and people. I also love to visit art galleries and read a lot of African cultural books to draw inspiration from my history. Once I have a direction, I create a mood board and begin sketching. Usually I find that the things I like, people like too! However, my team and I work very closely to produce what the customers want. Customer feedback is very important.

54KIBO: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ITEM FROM YOUR COLLECTION?

AD: I love all the pieces, in a different way. They all speak to a specific time or frame in my mind. Of course, I have certain pieces I wear all the time but it’s hard to choose a favorite.

54KIBO: WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOUR STUDIO?

AD: We have just launched the AW2020 FAITH Collection and we’re also working on another collection (SS2020) but not forgetting that AMI II is still in the design phase. Most importantly, we’re working on reinventing our designs. We are experimenting with shapes, textures, and materials to stay ahead of the game.

54KIBO: WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING FOR JEWELRY, CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN DESIGN, OR FASHION IN 2020?

AD: I think experimenting with shapes and materials will be big! I also think slow fashion is the latest trend in sustainable fashion, ensuring the jewelry is built to last.
