MAASAI BEADED AFRICAN WALL ART FOR LIVING ROOM
The Tanzania-based jewelry and home decor company, Sidai Designs, creates beaded African wall art for living room, bedroom and other interior spaces. They partner exclusively with expert Maasai women beaders thus helping to keep the centuries-old tradition of Maasai beadwork and intricate geometric design alive.
MAASAI CREATORS
Maasai women are globally known for their uniquely patterned, handcrafted beaded jewelry. In Maasai, an East African region on the border of Kenya and Tanzania, women use jewelry as a method of self expression. For centuries, Maasai women have created exquisitely designed, beaded jewelry collections.
Maasai women wear culturally-related pieces for special occasions, such as the elaborate jewelry a woman wears on her wedding day. The patterned jewelry often signifies Maasai women's age and social status. Even the colors of the beads hold a specific symbolic meaning. For example, red represents bravery, unity, and blood while white symbolizes peace, purity, and health.
SIDAI DESIGNS WALL ART & JEWELRY
What began with just five artisans in a small workshop in Arusha, Tanzania has since grown into a community of over 100 artisans and a big workshop space in a bustling area of Arusha town. Sidai, meaning beautiful in the Maasai language of Maa, serves as a creative oasis for women while crafting these uniquely-designed pieces. The design house offers quality pieces that masterfully mix modern designs with the century-long tradition of Maasai beaded jewelry.
Founders Becky and Eszter keep their creations both culturally inspired and environmentally conscious. The company derives their distinguished designs through tradition and muses including elderly Maasai women or the desert climate of the Maasai sub-region. They use a balanced combination of upcycled and luxurious materials to create the pieces that make up their collections, such as glass beads from Czech Republic that were introduced to the Maasai in the 19th Century by Arab traders, 24K gold-plated luxury Japanese glass beads and 14K gold chains made in the USA.
Sidai Designs creates seasonal jewelry and homeware collections, including African wall art for living room which is sold in the world’s fashion capitals of New York, Paris and London, and partners with global outlets including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
THE CHARITABLE ARM OF SIDAI DESIGNS
Sidai Designs employs Maasai women and provides educational opportunities so they can consistently provide for their families.
The Sidai Maasai Women Organization is a nationally registered NGO and the charitable arm of Sidai Designs. They now partner with locally based Tanzanian organizations to provide regular social programs for their artisans on a number of topics, such as women’s rights and agriculture.
